Nothing more fun that being just a few hundred meters from an exploding volcano that is spewing flaming rocks every twenty minutes…in a wooden boat…at night…about 60 miles from the closest island.  Well, in addition to the rarity of the situation, shooting this event was even more difficult.  Handheld telephoto night photography from a moving boat is not easy.  The results were few and far between but I still feel that some were worth posting here.  It was also a nice test of the VR on the 70-200mm and the ISO abilities of the D810.  All images were shot at USO 12,800 using either the Nikon 70-200mm F2.8 or the Nikon 50mm F1.4 (yup, we were that close…).
